One Morning in March will air in the weeks leading up to the twentieth anniversary of the day in March 1996 when gunman Thomas Hamilton entered Dunblane Primary School and shot dead 16 school children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor.
The 60 minute programme will feature an interview with the school’s head teacher Ron Taylor, speaking for the first time on camera. Gwen Mayor’s daughter and one of the young survivors have also contributed to the documentary which is produced and directed by Stephen Bennett.
Mick McAvoy, head of documentaries at STV, said: “The horrific events of the 13th of March, 1996 shocked the world. Through the brave and powerful testimony of people whose lives were forever changed that morning, this landmark film recalls the events in what will be a moving account of the power of the human spirit and the unbreakable bonds of family and of love."
In 2013, STV Productions was awarded Best Single Documentary by BAFTA Scotland for Fire in the Night, a feature documentary for BBC Scotland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster. STV Productions also produced The Lockerbie Bombing for ITV to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Pan Am disaster.
The film was commissioned by the BBC Network Commissioning Editor for Documentaries, Clare Paterson and BBC Scotland Commissioning Editor for Television, Ewan Angus.
