Elaine C. Smith joined by First Minister for STV's Hogmanay show

Tagged in: Press Releases
As 2015 comes to an end, STV will celebrate Hogmanay with Elaine C. Smith’s Burdz Eye View of Hogmanay, where the much loved comedian and actor gives a quirky, nostalgic and entertaining look at Scotland’s Hogmanay traditions.

With a set modelled on her parent’s living room from the 1970s and featuring footage from her popular stand up tour, Elaine looks back at a lifetime of Scottish New Years. From the ‘Hogmanay Clean’ to steak pie and Madeira cake, Elaine explores the uniquely Scottish traditions that we have held close in the past.

As well as being first-footed by celebrity friend, comedian Janey Godley, Elaine receives a very special visit for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who is joined by her mum Joan and her sister Gillian. The First Minister and her family reminisce about their childhood Hogmanays and reveal her grandmother’s yearly premonition about Scottish singing legend Andy Stewart.

First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon said:

“For many of us in Scotland, Hogmanay is as important as Christmas Day when it comes to spending time with family and friends.  I really enjoyed getting together with Elaine and bringing some of my family along for the recording of the show. It was great fun to reminisce about Scottish New Years past in STV’s 1970s style living room – the decor and the festive food on offer was strangely familiar!”

Celebrations continue as Elaine speaks to members of the public about their favourite traditions and pays a visit to a local distillery and a baker, before a very special countdown to the bells from around Scotland.

Elaine C. Smith said: “It’s a great pleasure to be part of STV’s festive schedule and get the opportunity to welcome in the new year with viewers. I think people will certainly relate to my own 'burdz eye view’ of a guid New Year.”

Elizabeth Partyka, deputy director of channels for STV, said: “As one of our most loved comedians and actors, Elaine will bring her unique sense of humour and charm to this year’s Hogmanay celebrations. I hope viewers across Scotland will enjoy bringing in the bells with us at STV.”

The programme is produced by RPM Arts & Solus Productions for STV.
