STV News is looking for an experienced software engineer / web developer to join our team developing one of Scotland’s leading digital news services

STV is Scotland’s home of news, entertainment and drama, serving audiences with quality content on air, online and on demand. Our STV News website and apps serve millions of Scots each month with trusted and engaging news content. We are evolving our digital products to be as simple and effective as possible with a focus on fast and reliable solutions.

About the role
As part of a small but focused team working directly on the STV News website and mobile apps, you will have a key role in creating an industry-leading digital news service. You will have significant ownership of the products you work on and will have the autonomy to make decisions that drive the products forward and shape the future of our digital news output.

Our core services are implemented in PHP (WordPress) with custom built APIs to power our Flutter-based mobile apps. Our web infrastructure is AWS cloud-based, which allows us to deliver highly available experiences with modest development timelines and manageable support overheads.

This is a role where your ideas really matter and you can directly influence and shape the direction of leading digital news products
Skills and experience:
  • At least 2-3 years of professional experience as a software engineer/web developer
  • Experience in developing native apps with Flutter and Dart and/or React Native
  • Strong web development knowledge with HTML/CSS and Javascript
  • Experience of working on high-traffic cloud applications
  • Experience of working with and building REST APIs
  • Ability to work in small teams with significant levels of product responsibility
  • A passion for continual improvement and how to optimise for performance
  • A confident, ambitious and curious approach to exploiting the latest digital products and trends
Advantageous additional skills:
  • A good working knowledge of PHP & associated frameworks
  • Experience in using git version control, GitHub, and terminal
  • Knowledge of Amazon Web Services and Cloud Infrastructure
  • Experience of React or similar Javascript frameworks
  • An interest in journalism and the distribution of trusted news content
