STV to host first referendum debate between Alistair Darling and Alex Salmond

STV has confirmed a landmark TV debate between First Minister Alex Salmond and leader of Better Together Alistair Darling ahead of the referendum on Scottish independence.

The debate will take place on Tuesday 5th August and be broadcast live from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow between 2000 and 2200. 

STV’s political editor Bernard Ponsonby will host the debate in front of an audience of 350 members of the public that fairly represent views from all sides.

Following the debate, a special edition of Scotland Tonight at 2230 will feature highlights and analysis.

Gordon Macmillan, head of news at STV, said: “STV has demonstrated its commitment to providing a platform for debate on Scotland’s constitutional future and securing this landmark TV debate on Tuesday 5th August confirms the next stage of our commitment. The live TV debate will give members of the public an opportunity to put questions to Alistair Darling and Alex Salmond and will be available to STV viewers and throughout the UK online.”

STV has hosted four Scotland Tonight Referendum Special debates featuring Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon debating with Scottish Secretaries Michael Moore and Alistair Carmichael, Deputy Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, and Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Johann Lamont.
