STV to broadcast Carmichael court hearing live in UK television first

STV will make television history next week when it becomes the first broadcaster in the UK to televise a Scottish court hearing live and in full.
STV News cameras will be operating inside Court 1 at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to report on proceedings brought on by the legal challenge to the election of Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael as MP for Orkney and Shetland.
Beginning at 10.30am on Monday, 7 September, the case will be heard by judges Lady Paton and Lord Matthews in the Election Court, which will sit for the first time in Scotland since 1965.
As well as broadcasting full coverage of the court sitting on the STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh channels, STV will stream the proceedings live on the STV website.  The STV Player live stream will allow those with internet access to watch the hearing anywhere in the United Kingdom, most notably Mr Carmichael’s constituents in Orkney and Shetland, many of whom live up to four hundred miles away and for whom a trip to Edinburgh takes more than 17 hours by ferry and road.
STV’s Head of News Gordon Macmillan said:
“STV News is delighted to have the opportunity to provide this ground-breaking broadcast.  We were the first broadcasters to film sentencing in a criminal trial in 2012.  This is a significant advance in the televising of the Scottish courts and it will provide an important live insight – most especially for Mr Carmichael’s constituents - into the legal process in this case.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service said:
“The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service held constructive discussions with all parties involved, in reaching an agreement to broadcast the Election Court and we are pleased STV has agreed to facilitate this. Guidelines have been put in place to allow proceedings to be streamed live in this exceptional case, which will enable constituents in Orkney and Shetland and across the whole of the UK to view the trial.”
Over the next week, STV’s technical team will install special remotely-controlled cameras in Court 1 in Parliament Square. The broadcaster will also provide television pictures from the Election Court to other broadcasters and media organizations.  The Court has also agreed that journalists will be allowed to use Twitter to tweet live.
The court sitting will be broadcast live on STV Edinburgh and STV Glasgow which can be found at Freeview channel 23, Sky channel 117 and Virgin channel 159 in both broadcast areas.  The live coverage will be available to watch online at
A special edition of STV’s flagship news and current affairs programme Scotland Tonight will report on the court proceedings on the evening of Monday, 7 September.
