On Saturday 27 August, STV, in partnership with The National Lottery and ITV, will ask Scots to get out and get active by taking part in I Am Team GB, the UK’s biggest ever sports day.

To celebrate the support the nation gives them by playing The National Lottery, Team GB's returning Olympians will join famous faces from STV at events across the UK.  Over £80 million has been raised each year by National Lottery players to help fund elite athletes during the four-year build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

To become part of this amazing day out, the public can visit the I Am Team GB website www.iamteamgb and sign up to find out all about the exciting free sporting events and activities in their area. From hockey to handball and rowing to running, hundreds of different sporting activities will be available to try, whatever the level of fitness.

The events will also be a homecoming for our lottery-funded Olympic athletes when they return from Rio, inspiring everyone, no matter what their level of fitness, to come together with Olympic heroes and famous faces in the biggest ever UK-wide sports day.

One of the events taking place across the UK will be hosted by Olympic and world champion Greg Rutherford, who retained his European long jump title last week.

Greg said: “You don’t have to be an Olympian to be part of Team GB.  National Lottery players make a huge difference through the support they give athletes and on the August bank holiday weekend, there is another amazing chance to be part of it.  There are going to be thousands of fun, free events across the country so make sure you sign up, get involved and be part of Team GB!”

To encourage people to get active, STV will also be switching off its transmission for an hour across all three channels to get the nation moving. At 9.30am on 27 August, the big switch off will see STV, STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh come off air for an hour to encourage Scots to get up and out and involved in sport at one of the many events happening across the country.

Elizabeth Partyka, STV's deputy director of channels, said: "Switching off our channels to encourage Scots to get active is an exciting initiative and we are delighted to be part of this unique partnership. We hope that this summer of sport will inspire Scots across the country to celebrate the performance of our Olympians and join in with the country's biggest ever sports day at their local clubs."

The event is taking place in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport and is supported by Join In.
